An informal term for an account whose content stops being shown to people who do not already follow it, without any notice being given. Platforms do not use the word, and what users describe as a shadowban usually maps onto a real policy action such as content being made ineligible for recommendation.

How can I tell if I am shadowbanned?

The decisive checks all involve viewing your account from somewhere you are not logged in. If your recent posts do not appear under hashtags you used, and your handle does not appear in search for people who do not follow you, that points at a restriction. Your own account always shows you your own posts, which is why checking from your own phone proves nothing.

Can any tool actually scan for a shadowban?

No. No platform exposes a flag saying an account is restricted, so there is nothing for a tool to query. Sites claiming to scan are either guessing from your public profile or asking for your login, and giving a third party your password creates a much bigger problem than a reach dip.

What causes a shadowban?

Is my reach drop actually a shadowban?

Usually not. Reach on recommendation-driven feeds swings hard week to week, because every post is tested with a small audience first. The tell is shape: a restriction is a cliff that affects everything at once including search and hashtag visibility, while a content problem is a slope that varies between posts.

Does using hashtags cause a shadowban?

Using hashtags does not. Pasting the same large block of tags onto every post is a spam pattern, and individual tags are sometimes restricted platform-wide because of how they have been used by others. Choosing tags that describe the specific post avoids both problems.

Can buying followers cause a shadowban?

Buying engagement violates every major platform's rules, and platforms remove engagement they identify as inauthentic. Services that require your password are the higher risk, since automation running from your account is the behaviour most likely to trigger a restriction.
