Social Media Image Size Checker
Current dimensions for every platform, plus a check that tells you whether an image you already have will be cropped and what to resize it to.
Check an image you already have
Your image dimensions are in its file properties, or in the export settings of whatever you made it in. Nothing is uploaded — this is arithmetic on two numbers you type.
Target for feed post (square) is 1,080 × 1,080 at 1:1.
Enter your own dimensions to check them against it.
Instagram enforces aspect ratios rather than publishing pixel specs. 1080 pixels is the widest Instagram renders, so these are the standard sizes for hitting each supported ratio at full resolution.
Where these numbers come from
YouTube publishes hard specifications, and its entries here are quoted from YouTube's own help pages. Those are marked official in the picker above. Worth knowing: YouTube now states 3840 × 2160 for video thumbnails, not the 1280 × 720 that most guides still repeat.
Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and Twitch do not publish an equivalent pixel specification. What they enforce is the aspect ratio, so the pixel figures for those platforms are the standard working sizes creators use to hit each ratio at the widest resolution the app renders. The ratio is the durable part; the pixel width is what dates.

Three things that matter more than the exact pixels
Match the ratio, then stop worrying about the width
Platforms scale images down cleanly and crop them brutally. Getting 4:5 right matters; whether you exported at 1080 or 1440 wide barely shows.
Keep text out of the edges
Reels and TikTok place captions, buttons and the username over the bottom and right of the frame. A banner gets cropped differently on every device, which is why YouTube publishes a safe area at all.
Export larger than you need, never smaller
Scaling down looks fine. Scaling up never does, and it is the most common reason a profile picture or thumbnail looks soft.
The profile picture is the one worth extra care, because it is displayed far smaller than anywhere you preview it. The guide to picking a profile picture that works at 40 pixels covers what survives that size.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube's help pages state 3840 x 2160 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, JPG or PNG format, and a maximum of 2 MB on mobile or 50 MB on desktop. Shorts thumbnails are 2160 x 3840 at 9:16 with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Most guides still quote the older 1280 x 720 figure.
What size is an Instagram post?
Instagram supports three feed ratios: 1:1 square at 1080 x 1080, 4:5 portrait at 1080 x 1350, and 1.91:1 landscape at 1080 x 566. Portrait takes the most vertical space in the feed. Instagram enforces the ratio rather than publishing a pixel spec, and 1080 pixels is the widest it renders.
What size is a YouTube banner?
YouTube recommends 2560 x 1440 pixels for best display across devices including TV. The minimum upload is 2048 x 1152 at 16:9, the safe area for text and logos is 1235 x 338 at that minimum size, and the file must be 6 MB or smaller.
What size are Instagram Reels and Stories?
Both use 1080 x 1920 at a 9:16 aspect ratio. Keep important text out of the bottom third, where the caption, username and action buttons are drawn over the video.
What size is a TikTok video?
1080 x 1920 at 9:16, the same full-screen vertical frame as Reels and Stories. Keep captions clear of the right edge and the bottom, where TikTok's own interface sits.
Does image size affect reach?
Not directly. No platform ranks content by resolution. What it affects is whether your image gets cropped badly or looks soft, both of which influence whether someone stops scrolling, and that does matter.
Should I upload larger images than the recommended size?
Slightly larger is fine and often better, because platforms scale down cleanly. Scaling up never looks good, so exporting below the target is the mistake to avoid. Very large files just get compressed anyway.
Why does my image get cropped?
Because its aspect ratio does not match what the placement expects. A 16:9 photo in a 4:5 feed slot has to lose something from the sides. Matching the ratio first, then the pixel size, prevents it.
What is a safe area?
The portion of an image guaranteed to stay visible after cropping across devices. YouTube publishes one for channel banners because a banner is cropped differently on phone, desktop and TV. Keeping logos and text inside it is the difference between a banner that works everywhere and one that only works on your screen.
Is this tool free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and it works from two numbers you type rather than from your actual image file.
